Children’s Eyesight

How important is it to have my child’s eyes examined regularly?
Many vision problems begin at an early age in childhood, so it’s crucial that children receive proper eye care from the time they are infants. Early detection and treatment are essential to prevent conditions that could potentially cause future problems or vision loss. Poor eyesight can have a significant adverse affect on a child’s educational and social performance.

At Eyesite, we recommend that every child has a professional eye examination shortly after birth, by six months of age and again just prior to entering school. Once in school, children should have an annual eye exam.

Eye examination costs at Eyesite are covered by the NHS for children under the age of 16, and NHS vouchers issued after the eye examination will cover the full cost of many of our frames and lenses.

We also specialise in children’s eye problems, such as colour deficiency or dyslexia, so if you feel your child could benefit from our professional advice just make an appointment to come in and see us. We want to make sure your child looks forward to visiting our practices whilst learning the importance of taking care of their eyes. Our children’s mascot Edgar is a friendly fellow and is very efficient at sending out appointment reminders!

Your child might enjoy playing the games on this fun eyecare-themed website we like.

Some of the signs to look for in your child that could indicate a vision problem are:

  •  Excessive blinking
  •  Squinting or screwing up the eyes to see
  •  Poor performance at school
  •  Reluctance to read
  •  Sitting closer to TV, peering closer to read books
  •  Clumsiness
  •  Headaches
Don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any concerns about your child’s eyesight or eye health.
